8 Password Tips to Help Protect Your Online Accounts

April 09, 2025

Stay Secure with Smarter, Stronger Passwords

At CSB, we care about your security just as much as your financial wellbeing. In today’s digital world, strong passwords are your first line of defense against cyber threats. Whether you're managing your personal banking or running a business, protecting your online accounts is essential.

Here are 8 simple but powerful tips to help you build better passwords and keep your information secure:

  1. Use a Minimum Length of 12 Characters
Longer passwords are tougher to crack. As a rule of thumb, aim for at least 12 characters—but the more, the better. Think of your password as a digital lock: the stronger it is, the safer you are.
  2. Mix It Up
Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters like !, @, #, $, or %. This variety adds complexity, making it significantly harder for hackers to guess.
  3. Avoid Common Words and Phrases
Skip anything a cybercriminal could easily guess. That means no “password123,” “qwerty,” or “welcome.” These may seem harmless, but they’re at the top of every hacker’s list.
  4. Don’t Use Personal Information
Avoid using names, birthdays, addresses, or other details that could be found on social media or public records. If it’s easy for someone to find, it’s easy to hack.
  5. Embrace Randomness
Instead of using obvious patterns or clever substitutions (like “P@ssw0rd”), try using truly random combinations of characters. Consider using a password manager to generate and store them for you securely.
  6. Change Passwords Regularly
Even strong passwords can be compromised. Make a habit of updating your passwords, especially for sensitive accounts like your online banking or email.
  7. Never Reuse Passwords
Using the same password across multiple accounts puts you at risk. If one account is breached, all of your accounts using that same password could be too. Keep each password unique to each service.
  8. Try a Passphrase Instead
A passphrase is a string of random words or a sentence that's easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Something like “BlueSky!27Jumps” is both strong and memorable.

At CSB, we’re committed to helping you bank safely and confidently. These tips are just one small way we support your financial wellbeing in a connected world. If you have questions about digital security or want help protecting your accounts, stop by your local branch or give us a call.
